What should be included on an invitation card?

What should be written on an invitation card naturally depends on the type of event and what you expect from your guests. If you're inviting people to a formal celebration, the tone should be more formal than if it’s a more personal and informal gathering.

However, there are some details that should almost always be included – whether it’s a graduation party, a 50th birthday, a student event, a class reunion, or a christening.

Name of the event

The event name should explain the type of event and who is being celebrated if it’s a personal celebration. Be sure to include both first and last names of the people being honored. For example: 'Welcome to xxx and xxx’s silver wedding anniversary' or 'Welcome to xxxx’s christening.'

If the party has a specific theme, you can be inspired by that theme when naming the event. For example, '1920s Masquerade', 'Alternative Christmas', or 'Zombie-themed Halloween Party'. If you're planning to serve a specific dish that some may dislike or be allergic to, it may be wise to include that in the name – e.g., fermented herring feast, crayfish party, beer tasting, etc.

Date and time

This is basic information that must be clearly stated. Double-check that it is correct before sending out the invitation, and it’s a good idea to bold the time and place. If it’s a children's party where parents are not expected to stay, it’s important to mention both the start time and when parents should pick up their children.

Location or address

For small and informal events, 'at our place' may be enough. But sometimes you need to be more specific. Include directions if you think they are necessary. For events like weddings or christenings where guests may move between two locations, include directions to both unless you know everyone is familiar with them.

RSVP deadline

You might think it's obvious that the recipient of an invitation will respond, but the invitation should still request an answer by a certain date. This is important for the host to plan seating and food. Invajt sends out automatic SMS reminders, so you don’t need to worry about this if you use our app.

Contact details

It’s appropriate to provide a phone number or other contact info for the person responsible for the event on the invitation.

Free text

When creating an invitation with our app, you also have space for free text. This is for information or requests that don’t fit under the previous headings. If you have special wishes regarding gifts, or prefer not to receive any, you can mention it here. Public transport schedules may also be helpful to include, especially for guests coming from afar. If the event is outdoors, mention that so guests can dress accordingly.
